It's getting to be the time of year to plan my garden. This means I will be planning to grow the herbs I like to use when cooking my venison. My favorite herbs are thyme and sage. I also really enjoy using thyme with mushrooms and carrots so they work together in many of my recipes to produce an amazing trio of taste!

We have eating up our venison hamburger lately. Made some really great meatballs and did the quick work night tacos the other day. As simple as it is to just make tacos, it still tastes great. We have ours with home-canned salsa. Love it!

We have a freezer full of venison again. Have already started cooking some great dinners for the family. We had the Sesame Venison and Pioneer Potluck last weekend. Now I have to figure out the menu for this weekend. Maybe it's time to break out the chili-sure is cold where we live right now.

I love canning venison. It makes for a really great cold weather quick-fix meal. I recommend following the UW Extension standards for canning wild game. Visit their site: learningstore.uwex.edu, search canning and you will see a booklet on Canning Meat, Wild Game, Poultry & Fish Safely. If you click on the "View PDF" for that book you can access the information in that booklet for FREE. You can also order the title if you like. As a UW Extension Food Safety Volunteer, I am happy to let you…

I am finishing cleaning up the venison out of our freezer. Can't wait to fill it up again this fall. Have been out of stew meat for a bit. I hope we get some early bow deer this fall. I have been working on promoting my book and am really looking forward to answering your questions and seeing where your interests lie.

I had a wonderful time attending a food preservation course for three days this week. There were 20 women in attendance. It is making me hungry for canning some fresh venison this fall!

It's that time of year for me to start cleaning out the freezer. I still have a bunch of hamburger left, so I think I will be making lots of mushroom burgers. Hope you all have a great day!

The snow cover here is almost gone, and the deer are really hitting the cut corn fields pretty hard around here. Still seeing many on the hill behind our house. Can't wait until I can get out and shoot my bow.

Still cooking up venison for the cookbook. I want everything to be just right, so I am revisiting recipes right up until the book goes to press. I made a great ring bologna casserole the other night.

I am gearing up for the big game. Won't tell you who I am routing for, but I am looking forward to some good friends, some good game, and some good venison. I am going to make some appetizers this year with burger. What game will you be bringing to the table?

I just shared this in the forum, but in case you don't always go there, I will share it here, too.
2 large venison steaks
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon dried garlic powder
1 teaspoon dried rosemary
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
In small mixing bowl, mix all ingredients except steaks. Cook steaks on grill until desired doneness is reached. Baste sauce on steaks for the last 2 minutes of grilling time.
